Route of the mailrun, from a sketch by Jack Rogers

Back in late 1942 Jack Hamerton, another Methodist, had taken French leave from Hautu and explored the area of prison land over the Tongariro River swing bridge. There he was spotted by the Rangipo prisoner-stockman, none other than Charlie Bickers, Chris’s old Bible class leader. They organised a regular monthly exchange of views, the depot for mail being a syrup tin buried near the bridge. The mailman often had to escape at night, cover some fairly rough terrain in the dark, and get back in before daylight. One night Methodist Jack Rogers, one of the regular mailmen, had to make his way through several stags during the roar. On another occasion he arrived back at 4.00am to find a screw inspecting the huts. He had to hide under a hut floor during a heavy frost. When the screw shone his torch into Jack’s hut he was fooled by the ‘dummy’ in the bed — rolled up clothes made to look like a man sleeping.
